The SFA softball team fell to 0-3 in Southland Conference play Sunday afternoon as Southwest Texas completed a three game sweep of the 'Jacks with an 8-3 win. The 'Jacks (4-21, 0-3) kept it close until the final inning when the Bobcats (16-9, 6-0) scored four runs to break open a close game.
Southwest Texas opened the game with a single run in the top of the first inning on two hits and added another run in the top of the second on one hit and an SFA error. Trailing 2-0, SFA pushed across a run after Meryl McGuire singled to open the third inning and eventually came around to score on a ground ball off the bat of Ragen Rutherford.
The Bobcats answered with a single run in the top of the fourth inning when they put together a two out rally. Kristen Zaleski singled with two outs, stole second and scored when Frances Mendoza singled her home.
The 'Jacks fought back however and two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ragen Rutherford reached on an error with one out in the inning. Brooke Chandler then singled and was followed by an RBI single from shortstop Mimi Van Ryn. Sarah Stone them pinch hit for center fielder Yvette Bass and singled home Chandler to cut the SWT lead to 4-3.
Devin Cobb (2-6) could not keep the Bobcats in check as Southwest Texas loaded the bases on an error, a walk and an attempted sacrifice on which no out was recorded. Cobb got a ground ball to third for the first out of the inning before giving up an RBI single to pinch hitter Perri Yarbrough. Cobb gave way to Traci Moore who gave up another hit allowing two more runs to score. Moore later walked in another run for the final tally.
SFA returns to action this Wednesday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. as the Texas Aggies travel to Nacogdoches for a non-conference doubleheader.
