NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Southland Conference play started off strong for the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks as the softball team completed a three-game sweep over Nicholls on Sunday. After winning both games of a doubleheader on Saturday, the Ladyjacks bested the Colonels 2-0 thanks to another stellar pitching performance from senior Carlie Thomas.
Thomas threw another complete game shutout for the Ladyjacks (11-12, 3-0) allowing only three hits. Nicholls (8-18, 0-3) did not get a hit until the sixth inning as Thomas tallied six strikeouts.
SFA slapped only five hits but they were enough for the win.
In the second inning, Shalie Day led off with a walk, and freshman catcher Katelyn Standley drove her in with a double down the leftfield line. Standley later scored on a single by Lindsey Campbell to provide the extra cushion. Nicole Wooten went 2-for-2 for the Ladyjacks but could not get involved in any of the scoring.
The victory marks the first series sweep in conference play for the Ladyjacks since defeating Southeastern in both games of a two-game series in 2012.
“Carlie Thomas and Brittany Lewis on the mound did an amazing job for us this weekend,” Head Coach Gay McNutt said. “We haven’t swept anybody in a long time, so I could get used to that. I enjoyed it and so did the players. It was fun to see their excitement.”
SFA plays a mid-week nonconference game on Thursday afternoon when the Ladyjacks host UT-San Antonio at 3 p.m. Then, the team hits the road to continue Southland play at Central Arkansas over the weekend.
