FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks softball team was unable to hold an early lead in a 9-2 loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks Tuesday evening at Bogle Park.
SFA (6-17, 0-3) scored the game’s first run in the first inning on an RBI single to center field from first baseman Alexis Callan, plating Cadie Weaver from second base to put the Ladyjacks ahead 1-0.
Arkansas (19-7, 0-0) responded immediately in their half of the first inning with a two-run home run off SFA starting pitcher Angela White from junior third baseman Chloe Oprzedek, her sixth of the season.
The Ladyjacks tied the game 2-2 in the top of the second inning by using a bit a small ball and taking advantage of poor Arkansas defense. Left fielder Casey Gamez started the rally by reaching on an Arkansas error by Oprzedek, followed by a bunt single from Jade Alesna. Razorback catcher Jayme Gee then had back-to-back passed balls that allowed Gamez to score and tie the game.
The Razorbacks offense never let up however, scoring five combined runs over the next three innings to give Arkansas a cushion they never relinquished. After a Gee solo homer in the second inning to make the score 3-2, the Razorbacks added another solo run in the third on a run-scoring single by left fielder Jennifer Rambo.
Arkansas then scored three runs in the fifth inning on three hits and a run-scoring hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
SFA’s White fell to 1-10 on the season by allowing nine runs, all earned, on eight hits, three walks and two hit batters. Arkansas’ Chelsea Cohen ran her mark to 9-3 by pitching 4.2 innings of shutout ball in relief of starting pitcher Hope McLemore.
The Ladyjacks will return to Southland Conference action this weekend when they host the Lamar Lady Cardinals, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
