OXFORD, Miss. -
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team dropped a pair of tough losses at Ole Miss Tuesday, falling to the Rebels, 2-0, in the opener and 1-0 in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader. The losses moved SFA's season record to 8-15.
In Tuesday's first game, Ole Miss scratched for a run in the second inning when Michelle May hit a two-out double down the left field line, then scored on a double to left-center by Stacy McCommon, two batters later. Brittany Warner then drew a walk to load the bases, but SFA starter Kari Hugie got pinch hitter Jill Bandhauer to pop out to right fielder Nicole Carter in foul territory to get out of the jam with no further damage.
The Ladyjacks tried to answer in their half of the third when they recorded their only two hits of the game. Carter led off with a single to right field, and Benet Higgs moved her to second base with a bunt single two batters later. But Rebels starter Dana Brill got the next two Ladyjacks to strike out looking to end the threat.
SFA's only other base runners got on in the fourth inning. Sydney Davis drew a one-out walk to get things started, then stole second, following a strikeout. Kendall Driver, the next batter, walked, but Carter grounded one back at Brill for the third out.
Ole Miss would add an insurance run in the sixth inning when McCommon hit a two-out triple to right-center, then scored on a single through the box by Warner. SFA's last nine batters of the game went down in order. Brill finished with 15 strikeouts.
Hugie took the loss for SFA. She worked six innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits and five walks. The Ladyjacks committed two errors in the contest.
In Game 2, the Rebels again got on the board early, when May homered to left field to lead off the second inning. Ole Miss didn't score again in the game, but neither could the Ladyjacks.
SFA mustered just one hit - a Davis single in the top of the second - but had runners advance as far as third base twice in the game. Higgs reached base on an error to lead off the fourth inning. The next two Ladyjack batters struck out, but Higgs stole second and third to put pressure on Ole Miss. She was stranded when Kim Daley grounded out to shortstop for the final out. The next inning, Davis led off with a walk and advanced to second on a ground-out. After Crystal Garcia drew a walk, Davis moved to third on a fielder's choice by Carter. But Carrie Woydziak's bunt attempt was lined right back at the pitcher, Mary Jane Callahan, for the third out.
Traci Moore started and took the loss for SFA. She lasted four innings and allowed one earned run on six hits and a walk, while recording one strikeout. Carter pitched the final two innings and didn't allow a runner to reach base. She put up three strikeouts.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Thursday, when they host Centenary College in a 5 p.m. game. SFA will play host to Southland Conference foe Texas State in a three-game series this weekend, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader, scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
