Ladyjacks Drop First Conference Games of Season
March 15, 2014
CONWAY, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin softball team dropped its first games of Southland Conference play on Saturday as the Ladyjacks lost both ends of a doubleheader at Central Arkansas. After opening league play 3-0 last week, SFA now has two blemishes after losing 7-6 and 7-3.
SFA (12-14, 3-2) jumped on UCA (13-16, 4-1) early in the first game with four runs in the first inning. The Sugar Bears cut into the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. SFA countered with a pair in the sixth to again take a larger lead.
UCA scored one in the bottom of the sixth to trail by only two heading into the final inning. In the bottom of the seventh, UCA took advantage of an error and a hit batsman to put the tying run on base with one out. A single would load the bases, and UCA another single would tie the game at 6-6. An infield single would end the game to drive in the seventh run for UCA.
In the first game, freshman catcher Katelyn Standley continued to stay hot at the plate hitting 4-for-4 and driving in a pair of runs for SFA. Shalie Day also had two RBI, and Heather Hollingsworth hit 2-for-4.
SFA took the lead first in the second contest of the day with two runs in the second inning, but UCA quickly answered with three in the third. The Sugar Bears added two more in the fourth and fifth innings. SFA would add a run in the sixth but it was too late for a comeback with UCA getting the 7-3 victory.
Standley again had a good game batting as she went 1-for-1 and was walked twice. Standley also hit her seventh home run of the season.
The Sugar Bears were too much on offense in the second game combining for 10 hits compared to SFA's five. No Ladyjack tallied multiple hits in the second game.
SFA and UCA will tangle in the series finale at noon Sunday.
