RUSTON, La. - For the second time this season the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks softball team shutout the Western Athletic Conference's Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters, defeating Tech 2-0 Wednesday evening in their home opener.
SFA (9-18, 2-4) starting pitcher Carlie Thomas improved her record to 6-8 with a dazzling two-hit complete game shutout performance, striking out six and walking only two batters. Thomas puzzled a La. Tech offense that entered play on Wednesday ranked 27th in the nation in batting average (.319).
The Ladyjacks' offense managed just four hits but scored single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings that proved to be the difference.
Ladyjack sophomore catcher Shalie Day broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a line drive solo blast to right field off La. Tech starting pitcher Anna Cross for the game-winning hit and second home run of the season.
SFA later added an insurance run in the sixth on a fielding error by Techster shortstop Michelle Jones, allowing Lindsay Campbell to score from third with two outs in the inning.
SFA also shutout La. Tech two weeks ago in Nacogdoches, 1-0.
The Ladyjacks will now return to Southland Conference play this weekend when they travel to Thibodaux, La. for a three-game set against Nicholls State. That series will begin on Saturday, March 23 in a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. The two teams will then play the finale on Sunday at 12 p.m.
