Boxscores: Game 1 | Game 2
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team took the first game of a doubleheader off rival Northwestern State 4-1 on Saturday afternoon but could not hold onto the lead and fell 5-2 in the second contest. It was SFA’s first loss at home this season.
SFA (13-15, 4-3) got a gem of an outing from senior pitcher Carlie Thomas in the first game as she threw a complete game to get the 4-1 victory. Northwestern State (13-13, 5-3) got its lone run from a solo home run in the third inning.
Thomas (8-7) gave up six hits, and the Lady Demons were unable to capitalize, stranding eight runners on base. She sent the Lady Demons back to the dugout empty all day with an impressive 12 strikeouts.
Offensively in the first game, SFA got four runs out of four hits thanks to a pair of home runs. Elizabeth Arana blasted a solo shot in the third inning to go up 2-1. Brittany Lewis followed with a single to right field, and then Shalie Day hit a ball long over the leftfield fence to make it 4-1.
SFA jumped on top in the second contest right away. With two outs in the first inning, Arana blasted another ball, but this time it hit off the top of the fence and stayed in the ballpark for a triple. Lewis drove Arana home after an error by the shortstop.
With SFA up 2-1 in the sixth, the Lady Demons proceeded to score four runs and take the lead for good. Three singles and three walks helped lead to the four runs, and SFA could not put a comeback together.
The Ladyjacks and Lady Demons will play the rubber match at 1 p.m. Sunday at SFA Softball Field.
