March 23, 2013
THIBODAUX, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks softball team split a doubleheader on Saturday at Nicholls State, defeating the Colonels 2-1 in game one to extend their season-high four-game win streak but saw it come to an end in a 4-2 loss in game two.
The two teams will play the rubber game tomorrow at 12 p.m. before the Ladyjacks (10-19, 3-5) come home for a three-game series against Sam Houston State starting on March 29.
Game One: SFA 2-NIC 1
After Nicholls jumped out to an initial 1-0 lead in the third inning, the Ladyjacks responded right back with two runs on two hits and took advantage of a Colonels error in the fourth inning. SFA junior catcher Charlotte Singleton began the frame with a leadoff walk and then advanced to third base one batter later when Bethany Brown reached first on a sac bunt and throwing error by the Nicholls' defense.
Following a wild pitch that allowed Brown to reach second, SFA junior outfielder Nicole Wooten tied the game 1-1 with an RBI single to left-center field, plating Singleton from third. Freshman outfielder Alisa Hamilton then reached on a fielders choice, but Brown was thrown out at the plate. However, junior shortstop Elizabeth Arana came through one batter later with an RBI single to left field to score Hamilton and give the Ladyjacks the lead for good, 2-1.
SFA starting pitcher Carlie Thomas earned her second victory of the week, improving her individual record to 7-8 by tossing a complete game and allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out six.
Nicholls' Ashton Bennett suffered the loss allowing both earned runs on 10 hits to fall to 7-8 on the season.
Game Two: NIC 4-SFA 2
The Colonels exploded for three runs in the first inning on an RBI double from shortstop Leah Andrus, followed by a two-run home run by right fielder Bennett two batters later. Nicholls' catcher Brittany Marcet later added an RBI double in the fifth inning off SFA starter Angela White to increase the Colonel lead to 4-0.
Nicholls' starting pitcher Hannah Haydel, who improved earned the victory, silenced the SFA bats for much of the afternoon and had a one-hit shutout entering the seventh inning before the Ladyjacks began to rally.
Shanice Love began the inning by pinch-hitting and singling to shortstop followed by a walk to Singleton. Nicholls then committed one of their two errors on a fielding error by the third baseman, loading the bases with nobody out for the Ladyjacks. However, the comeback hit a major halt when Wooten grounded into a 4-3 double play that scored pinch-runner Keisha Gray from third. Hamilton kept the rally alive with a RBI single to shortstop to score pinch-runner Brittany Lee and make the score 4-2.
That provided Arana a chance to come to the plate as the tying run but the junior shortstop popped out to second base to end the game.
SFA starter Angela White took the loss in the circle, falling to 3-11 on the season by allowing four earned runs on eight hits while punching out nine.
