MONROE, La. -
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team got a strong pitching performance from freshman Traci Moore (North Richland Hills, Texas), who went six innings who surrendered only two runs on seven hits, but it wasn't enough as the Ladyjacks dropped a heartbreaker to Louisiana-Monroe Friday, 2-1. SFA is now 6-37 (.140) overall, and 2-13 (.133) in the Southland Conference.
The Lady Indians grabbed an early 1-0 lead in their half of the second inning when Connie Coleman singled to centerfield to Jenny Buller from third, who singled to lead off the inning. Buller finished the game going 2-for-3. The 1-0 lead held until the bottom of the sixth inning when Buller hit a solo home run off Moore to increase the ULM advantage to 2-0.
But the Ladyjacks mounted a rally in their half of the seventh inning. Junior Devin Cobb (Pasadena, Texas) singled to left to lead off the inning. Sophomore Yvette Bass (Midland, Texas) pinch-ran for Cobb. Bass advanced to second on a sacrifice by freshman Kacie Rees (Pasadena, Texas). Sophomore Brooke Chandler (Shreveport, La.) doubled to left scoring Bass and cutting the Lady Indian advantage to just one run, 2-1. But that is as close as the Ladyjacks would get as senior Erica Henrion (Burleson, Texas) popped up to the shortstop for the final out of the game.
Cobb, Henrion, Rees and freshman Ragen Rutherford (North Richland Hills, Texas) each collected a hit while junior Meryl McGuire (Elverta, Calif.) went 2-for-3 (.667) on the day.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday April 6th, when they travel to Arlington, Texas, for a three-game set against the Mavericks. Saturday's game is a scheduled double-header that is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
