NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks softball came away with a split in Friday's afternoon doubleheader versus rival Sam Houston State, defeating the Bearkats 5-3 in game one before falling to SHSU, 12-1 in five innings in game two.
SFA (11-21, 4-7) will look to earn the series victory tomorrow afternoon when they take on the Bearkats at 1 p.m. from the SFA Softball Field.
Game 1: SFA 5-SHSU 3
SFA 5-SHSU 3 Junior shortstop Elizabeth Arana went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including a clutch two-run single in the bottom of the fourth, and SFA starting pitcher Carlie Thomas worked out of numerous jams to help propel the Ladyjacks to a 5-3 win over the Bearkats in game one.
Thomas improved her individual mark to 8-9 by allowing three earned runs on 11 hits while striking out four and walking two batters.
The Ladyjacks jumped on SHSU early in the first inning on a blooping RBI single from Shanice Love in which SFA pinch runner Heather Hollingsworth was able to come all the way around from second to score.
SHSU (19-18, 5-6) responded with a run of their own in the top of the third inning to tie the game 1-1 on an RBI single from shortstop Tiffany Castillo, scoring Tori Benavidez from second.
However, SFA took the lead for good in their half of the third inning on a run-scoring single from Shalie Day to left field, allowing Arana to score. The Ladyjacks would late increase their lead to 5-1 by scoring three runs in the fourth inning on the two-run single from Arana and another on a throwing error from SHSU starting pitcher Shelby Lancaster.
The Bearkats threatened to tie the game in the seventh inning, scoring two runs with two outs, but Thomas was able to get Kim Damian to fly out to left field with the tying runs on base to end the game and secure the win for SFA.
Game 2: SHSU 12-SFA 1
SHSU 12-SFA 1 (5 innings) The Bearkats' offense exploded for 12 runs on 11 hits in the first three innings off SFA starting pitcher Angela White (3-12) to run-rule SFA 12-1 in five innings. All but one SHSU batter had a hit in the game and Tiffany Castillo led SHSU with two hits and 5 RBI, including a grand slam off White in the third inning to increase SHSU's lead to 11-1.
SFA's Hannah Welch spelled White in the third and tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just three singles. SHSU's Meme Quinn improved to 6-4 on the season by limiting the SFA offense to just three hits and one earned run in five innings.
The Ladyjacks lone run came on an RBI single from Hollingsworth in the bottom of the first inning.
