March 29, 2014
HOUSTON, Texas – Stephen F. Austin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Houston Baptist on Saturday in a pair of heartbreaking losses. The Ladyjacks fell 1-0 to open the day and then lost 8-5 in the second game after allowing four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Ladyjacks got another strong showing from senior pitcher Carlie Thomas to start the doubleheader as Thomas threw a complete game and allowed only four hits. One of those hits was a solo home run by Alyssa Burnett that proved to be all the Huskies needed as SFA mustered only four hits as well and left five runners on base.
SFA (14-16, 5-4 SLC) got three of those hits in the opener from Alisa Hamilton in the leadoff spot.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Ladyjacks’ bats came alive, scoring runs in each of the first three innings to go up 4-2. Katelyn Standley led the way at the plate for SFA in the second contest hitting 2-for-3 with three RBI. Taylor LeFlore got the game going early with a solo home run in the top of the first.
HBU (11-16, 7-4) trailed 5-2 heading into the sixth inning and chipped away at the deficit with a pair of runs off of a single and back-to-back doubles for the Huskies. In the bottom of the seventh, HBU got a lead-off double. After a strikeout, back-to-back singles plated one run to put the Huskies behind by only a run. Burnett ended the game with her second homer of the day to plate three runs and win 8-5.
SFA and HBU will play the final game of the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
