NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Sam Houston State Bearkats scored eight two-outs run in an 8-1 victory over the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks softball team Saturday afternoon for the series clinching win.
SHSU (20-18, 6-6) scored three runs in the second inning on a two-out opposite field three-run home run from center fielder Tori Benavidez off SFA starting pitcher Carlie Thomas. Benavidez was one of two Bearkats to finish the afternoon with 3 RBI, the other being right fielder Cecilia Castillo.
The Bearkats extended their lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning by scoring four more runs on three hits and a SFA error. In that frame Castillo had a two-run single up the middle to make the score 5-0.
Thomas, who fell to 8-10 on the season, went 3.2 innings allowing seven runs (six of which were earned) on eight hits. Hannah Welch pitched in relief for a second consecutive day, going 3.1 innings and allowing one earned run on four hits.
SFA (11-22, 4-8) managed just three hits on their own, including two from catcher Charlotte Singleton, who was responsioble for SFA's lone RBI in the sixth inning.
SHSU starting pitcher Haley Baros earned her sixth win of the season by limiting the SFA offense to one earned run on three hits while striking out four.
The Ladyjacks will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 6 when they travel to Lake Charles, La. for a series against the Cowgirls. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
