NATCHITOCHES, La. - Northwestern State starting pitcher Kylie Roos threw a complete game, one-hit shutout to help the Lady Demons defeat Stephen F. Austin 3-0 Friday evening at the NSU Softball Complex.
SFA (9-24, 2-7) got a double from freshman shortstop Linda Linares in the top of the fifth inning to break up Roos' no-hitter attempt. Roos, a junior from Celina, Texas, allowed just the one hit while striking out eight Ladyjacks and issuing two walks.
The Lady Demons (14-23, 3-8) got on the scoreboard first in the third inning, pushing two runs across on three hits off SFA starting pitcher Angela White. NSU shortstop Tara McKenney led off the frame with a walk and was then moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Blair Beard. One batter later Roos followed with an RBI single to center field to score McKenney and give the Lady Demons a 1-0 lead.
NSU second baseman Cali Burke later worked a bases loaded walk off White to cash in another Lady Demon run, scoring Roos.
SFA's Carlie Thomas relieved White in the third inning and would allow a run on three hits, three strikeouts and two walks over the final 3.2 innings. The Lady Demons' Samantha Roberts collected her third hit of the evening in the fifth, an RBI double to center field that increased the NSU lead to 3-0.
White was the pitcher of record for SFA, falling to 4-12 on the season. The junior allowed two earned runs on five hits while walking four batters in 2.1 innings. Roos improved to 5-10 this season.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action tomorrow against NSU with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
