NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team was shutout for a second straight day at Northwestern State Saturday, falling 8-0 in six innings at the NSU Softball Complex.
SFA (9-25, 2-8) managed just one hit for a second straight day, a Cadie Weaver single to lead off the fifth inning. Lady Demon starting pitcher Brooke Boening improved to 4-4 on the season by going 5.1 innings while allowing just the one hit and striking out nine.
The difference in the ballgame boiled down to the first inning where the Ladyjacks failed to cash in on a golden opportunity while NSU made the most of theirs. SFA loaded the bases with just one out via two walks and a hit batter against Boening. However, Jessica Arana and Kaitlyn Mixon struck out in back-to-back plate appearances to leave the bases juiced without scratching across a run.
The Lady Demons (15-23, 4-8) faced a similar situation in their half of the first inning, loading the bases with one out and SFA starting pitcher Carlie Thomas got Brianna Rodriguez to foul out to third base for the second out of the inning. Second baseman Cali Burke then came through for NSU with an RBI single to left field to put the Lady Demons up 1-0. One batter later, Cassandra Barefield delivered the biggest blow of the game with a grand slam to center field to make the score 5-0.
NSU would tack on single runs in the second and fourth innings, and one more in the sixth on a bases loaded hit by pitch to complete the eight-run rule. Thomas saw her individual record fall to 5-9, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits, four walks and four strikeouts.
SFA, who has now lost eight of their past nine games and four straight, will look to get back in the win column Wednesday, April 11 when they travel to Houston Baptist for a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 2 p.m.
