LAKE CHARLES, La. - Stephen F. Austin junior starting pitcher Carlie Thomas tossed her third complete game shutout of the season and the Ladyjacks struck late for two runs in the sixth inning to salvage the third game of the series at McNeese State with a 2-0 victory.
Thomas improved to 9-10 overall in the circle by throwing seven shutout innings and allowing just three hits while striking out three and walking just one batter.
SFA (12-24, 5-10) did all their damage in the sixth inning scoring two runs on one hit and taking advantage of one costly Cowgirl error. Junior shortstop Elizabeth Arana got the rally started with a one-out walk and was able to advance to second one batter later when McNeese ctacher Stacey Conley committed an error.
SFA freshman designated player Shanice Love then delivered the biggest hit of the afternoon with a run-scoring single to right field to plate Arana and give the Ladyjacks the lead for good. The RBI from Love was her fifth of the season. The Ladyjacks added an insurance run one batter later on a sac fly from sophomore Shalie Day, scoring Nicole Wooten from third and giving SFA a 2-0 advantage.
McNeese (29-10, 10-3) tried to put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff walk but Thomas retired the next three batters to take down the first place Cowgirls.
The Ladyjacks will now come home for an eight-game homestand that begins on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader against the No. 17 Baylor Bears (29-9). First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
