The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team improved to 15-23 on the season and 7-14 in Southland Conference play Sunday afternoon it rallied to defeat Louisiana-Monroe, 5-4, in 10 innings. Nicole Carter recorded the gamewinning hit with double to plate Lee Lara.
The Ladyjacks fell behind by three runs in the second inning when senior Ragen Rutherford doubled in Lara for the Ladyjacks first run of the game, and cutting the lead to 3-1.
Rutherford cut the lead down to one-run when she hit a solo shot to left center in the bottom half of the fourth inning. She finished the afternoon going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. ULM answered with another run in the top half of the fifth to increase their advantage back to two runs, but it would be the last time a Lady Indian would cross home plate as the SFA pitching staff shut down ULM over the final five innings.
The Ladyjacks tied the game at 4 in the bottom half of the sixth inning. SFA had runners on second and third with two outs when Crystal Dahlquist singled to score Jessica Tullos and Kristina Swart. Dahlquist finished the game 2-for-3 on the afternoon with two RBIs.
The score remained 4-4 until the bottom half of the 10th inning when Carter stepped up to play the role of hero. Carter was 3-for-5 at the plate with the game-winning RBI.
Traci Moore pitched six innings to pick up the victory. Moore surrendered only one run on four hits while striking out six batters.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a doubleheader. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m., from the Coy Simms Complex.
