THIBODAUX, La. -
After combining for 19 hits in Saturday's series-opening doubleheader at Nicholls State, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team struggled at the plate Sunday, suffering a 2-1 loss in the series finale. SFA managed just four hits in the game and stranded eight runners.
With the loss, SFA falls to 27-17 on the season and 14-6 in Southland Conference play.
For the third time in the series, SFA struck first. The Ladyjacks put up a run in the first inning, when freshman Monica Hirsch scored from third on a deep foul-out off the bat of senior Jessica Tullos. Hirsch had led off the game with a walk, then stole second and moved to third on a passed ball.
The Colonels used two hits and an error to answer with a run in the bottom half of the inning, then added an unearned run in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead.
SFA led off the third and fourth innings with extra-base hits but came away with nothing to show for it in either frame. Junior Kari Hugie started the third with a triple to right field, then was thrown out trying to score on a passed ball. An inning later, Kendal Harper led off with a double to left-center but was stranded on second.
SFA mustered just one hit the rest of the way -- a bunt single with two outs by Harper -- in the seventh inning, and Nicholls State held on for the win.
Freshman pitcher Monika Covington (15-8) gave up one earned run on three hits and a walk with nine strikeouts.
Harper and Hugie were each 2-for-4 to lead SFA.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to take on Louisiana-Monroe in a non-conference game. The contest is set to begin at 5 p.m. SFA will then host SLC-leading Texas State in a weekend series, starting with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
