CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – With some late-game heroics by the entire team and another shutout by senior pitcher Carlie Thomas, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks rallied for a 4-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in nine innings on Sunday.
In the midst of a pitchers duel with both teams scoreless through seven innings, Thomas continued to apply pressure to the Islanders as she kept them from posing a threat. Her ability to hold off TAMUCC (10-30, 5-12) paid off as her teammates came up big in the top of the ninth.
Shalie Day started the ninth off with a single for SFA (17-21, 8-8). Nicole Wooten came in to pinch run and add speed to the base paths as the Ladyjacks looked to manufacture at least one run in extra innings. Wooten advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Katelyn Standley drove her home with a single to left.
Head Coach Gay McNutt elected to put speed on the bases again with Chelsie Wilson pinch running for Standley. Brittany Lewis was hit by a pitch, and an infield single by Heather Hollingsworth loaded the bases with no outs.
The Ladyjacks would add another run with a bases loaded walk by Cadie Weaver. Then, it was Lindsey Campbell who helped provide even more insurance for SFA with a two-run single to plate Hollingsworth and Lewis.
In the ninth, the Ladyjacks scored four runs on four hits and put the game back in the hands of Thomas.
The Islanders registered two quick outs with a strikeout and fly out. After a single to left, Thomas notched her 10th strikeout of the day to end the game in style and post her fifth complete game shutout of the season.
SFA returns home for one mid-week nonconference game this week. The Ladyjacks will play host to Louisiana Tech at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the SFA Softball Field. SFA returns to the road next weekend for a Southland Conference series at Southeastern Louisiana.
