CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders softball team used a four-run first inning to defeat the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks 4-2 Saturday afternoon.
The SFA (11-27, 2-10) offense managed just two hits combined off Islander starting pitcher Jordan Trujillo and reliever Greta Cecchetti. Cecchetti (9-4) pitched the final 4.2 innings to earn the victory while allowing just one hit and striking out seven.
Carlie Thomas (6-10) started in the circle for the Ladyjacks and lasted just one inning before being relieved by Angela White. White pitched the final five innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits and striking out three batters.
SFA actually struck first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Bethany Brown set the table with a leadoff walk and then stole second. After Brown advanced to third on a fielding error by Trujillo, Elizabeth Arana gave SFA the lead with an RBI sac bunt.
The lead would be short-lived, however, with the Islanders pushing across four runs on four hits in their half of the first inning off SFA starter Carlie Thomas.
Islander centerfielder Cassie Redman started the first with a leadoff walk but Thomas quickly struck out the next two batters sandwiched in between a stolen base from Redman. With two outs and Redman on second, the Islanders proceeded to hit four consecutive singles, which included RBI singles from Jasmine Jackson and a two-run single by Cassie Carroll.
The Islanders (15-16, 10-4) scored their fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch that allowed Meagan McKinney to score from third base.
SFA would scratch another run on the board in the third inning on a RBI sacrifice fly by Faith Hoisager for their second and final run.
The Ladyjacks will host McNeese State on Monday, April 16 in a makeup doubleheader that was rained out earlier this season. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
