NACOGDOCHES, Texas – In a battle to the wire that saw both the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks and Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters struggle to produce much offense until late in the game the Ladyjacks fell 3-2 after taking a 2-1 lead in the sixth.
SFA (17-22) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Elizabeth Arana was hit by a pitch to start the inning then advanced on a wild pitch. After advancing on a groundout, Brittany Lewis drove her in with a single up the middle.
Both teams struggle to manufacture any runs until the bottom of the sixth when Katelyn Standley just missed a home run off the fence in left field to get a leadoff double. Brittany Lee came in to pinch run for Standley and stole third base to put the pressure on LaTech. Then, Taylor Vick hit a deep fly ball to center to drive Lee in and take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
LaTech (16-25) responded in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer to take the lead 3-2. With one out, Kristen Miles singled up the middle and Pauline Tufi followed with her blast over the fence in left field.
“We’re a much better team than a year ago. Our young kids are coming through and they’re doing some great things for us,” Head Coach Gay McNutt said after the game. “But we’ve got to get better and be able to close games. I think if we can do that we will be very successful down the road. We can’t score one run and then expect to sit on it.”
SFA had five hits on the day compared to nine for LaTech. Lewis (5-8) took the loss for SFA throwing a complete game. Tufi (11-7) took the win for LaTech in relief.
The loss is the first nonconference loss at home for the Ladyjacks this season. SFA will return to Southland Conference play this weekend at Southeastern Louisiana. The Ladyjacks and Lions will play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday and close the series at noon Saturday.
