The Stephen F. Austin softball team swept Texas Southern in a double-header Tuesday night at the Coy Simms Complex to improve to 9-42 overall for the season. SFA won the first game, 2-1, in eight innings. The 'Jacks returned to the field and shutout the Lady Tigers, 3-0, in the second game.
Junior Devin Cobb was solid on the mound for SFA in the first game surrendering only four hits over eight innings. TSU had its struggles in the field as well recording three errors, including one in the bottom half of the second inning that would eventually lead to SFA's first run of the game. The Lady Tigers tied the game in the top of the sixth but that would be all the offense SFA would surrender. The 'Jacks scored the game-winning run when sophomore Brooke Chandler singled to left field in the bottom of the eighth to drive home Erica Henrion.
SFA got another solid pitching performance from freshman Traci Moore in the second game as she surrendered two hits in six innings. Chandler was the offensive star in game two as well, recording two hits and an RBI in her three plate appearances. Chandler gave SFA all the offense it would need, when she hit a solo homerun to left-centerfield off the Lady Tigers' Deana Lemon, in the bottom of the fifth. The 'Jacks followed that up with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to ice the victory. Cobb pitched the seventh inning to record the save.
Senior Erica Henrion picked up a hit while Cobb and freshman Kacie Rees each recorded two hits.
SFA returns to action Saturday April 20 when the 'Jacks travel to Thibodaux, La., for a double-header against Nicholls State. The first game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
