NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The 2002 softball season came to a close Sunday afternoon for the 'Jacks of Stephen F. Austin with a 10-1 loss to the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana. SFA ends the season with a record of 9-51, and 3-23 in Southland Conference play. The Lions moved to 13-14 in conference play and 28-25 with the three game sweep of SFA.
SLU scored single runs in both the first and second innings to go up 2-0, then added a pair of runs on a two-run home run off the bat of Heather Dye in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead off starter Devin Cobb (4-17). Cobb worked four-plus innings before giving way to Traci Moore in the fifth inning. Cobb allowed five runs on five hits and did not strike out a batter. Moore came on in relief in the fifth inning and gave up five runs on five hits in only one inning.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, SFA scored its only run of the game after Mimi Van Ryn reached on an error and scored on a double to left field by Sarah Stone. It could have been a bigger inning for the 'Jacks had it not been for SLU left fielder Stacy White's play on a screaming line drive off the bat of Brooke Chandler for the second out of the inning. Chandler hit a rope to left that would have scored another run for SFA, but White made the play down the line.
SLU broke open the 4-1 game with another Dye homer in the fifth inning which ignited a six run inning to close out the game.
Seniors Erica Henrion, Mimi Van Ryn, B.J. Cruff and Rashad Bunch were honored before the game as part of Senior Day festivities.
