NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin starting pitcher Angela White pitched one of her best games of the season but UTSA counterpart Haylee Staton proved to be just a bit better in a Roadrunners 1-0 victory over the Ladyjacks Friday afternoon at the SFA Softball Field.
Staton, who improved to 14-7 on the season, limited the Ladyjacks (16-32, 6-13) to just two hits over seven innings of work on just 75 pitches while striking out six and walking none for the Roadrunners (22-26, 11-8).
White (6-15) nearly matched Staton inning for inning, allowing just one earned run in seven innings on five hits, one walk and nine strikeouts.
The game's lone run came in the top of the seventh inning in which the Roadrunners collected three hits. Nikki Goff began the fram with a single up the middle before moving over to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Courtney Buchman. Samantha Beeson then hit a sharp single through the left side but Goff had to be held at third base.
White proceeded to get a big strikeout of Alaina Byars after Beeson stole second for the second out of the inning. However, Laura Little was able to hit a chopper up the middle that glanced of the glove of SFA second baseman Elizabeth Arana, allowing Goff to score the winning run. Beeson would be thrown out on the play trying to score from second base but was thrown out at home by SFA shortstop Linda Linares.
The Ladyjacks were able to get one baserunner in the bottom of the seventh inning but with two outs, Elizabeth Aran hit a sinking line drive that was caught by Buchman in center field on a shoestring snag to end the game.
SFA will play their final game of the 2012 season tomorrow at 1 p.m. on Senior Day. Saturday will mark the final day of the careers of seniors Jessica Arana and Amber Price.
