FRISCO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks softball team has been picked to finish fifth and seventh respectively, according to polls of league head coaches and sports information directors. SFA earned 44 points in the Southland Conference Coaches’ Poll and pulled 36 points in the SID Poll.
Last season the Ladyjacks went 16-33 overall and 6-14 in SLC play to finish in ninth place. The Ladyjacks will return eight letter-winners and four starters while losing six lettermen and five starters.
“We obviously did not finish where we wanted to finish last year but this is a new season, with new players and new optimism, “ SFA head coach Gay McNutt said prior to her sixth season with the Ladyjacks and 19th overall. “Preseason polls are just a guess and one of our goals as a team this year will be to prove the polls wrong. My job is to get this team back to the top of the conference.”
Sam Houston State was picked to win the conference in each poll, followed up by McNeese State and Central Arkansas.
Arana, a native of the Woodlands, Texas, led the Ladyjacks in batting average (.295), hits (38), doubles (10), triples (3), runs batted in (21), total bases (66), slugging percentage (.512), walks (29) and on-base percentage (.430). Arana was also tied with Bethany Brown for the team-lead in home runs with four.

The Ladyjacks will start the season Feb. 7 against Oregon State in the first of five games at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona. SFA will not play their first game at home until March 6 versus Louisiana Tech.
