NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Posting a 3-2 record last weekend and defeating the No. 8 team in the nation helped the Stephen F. Austin softball team swept Southland Conference Players of the Week. Carlie Thomas claimed pitcher of the week and first baseman Shalie Day took hitter of the week honors.
Thomas threw two complete games last week while posting victories against Army and No. 8/9 Nebraska. The Huntington native threw a complete game shutout of the Cornhuskers as she allowed six hits while striking out five Nebraska batters. That performance came a day after throwing a complete game against Army in a 7-1 win with the only run of the game being unearned. Thomas had 12 strikeouts for the week and opponents hit just .190 against her in three appearances against NCAA Tournament teams.
Day hit an impressive .500 for the week at the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic. She led the Ladyjacks with seven RBI and belted two homers against Army on Friday. Day also scored two runs and drew three walks on the week. Her .500 average and .929 slugging percentage helped carry the Ladyjacks to three consecutive wins over NCAA Regional teams in defeating Army twice and besting No. 8 Nebraska.
These awards mark the first SLC Player of the Week awards for the Ladyjacks this season. SFA heads to McNeese State on Wednesday for a doubleheader that will count as nonconference contests against the fellow Southland member. The team then heads to a tournament hosted by North Texas this weekend.
