NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Tournament season continues this weekend for the Ladyjacks softball team as Stephen F. Austin heads to the Texas Shootout hosted by North Texas.
Action at the nonconference tournament begins on Thursday, but the Ladyjacks will not play until Friday morning when they face Sam Houston State and Prairie View A&M at 9 and 11, respectively. SFA will face Abilene Christian and North Texas on Saturday with Sunday’s opponent to be determined. North Texas enters their home tournament on a six-game winning streak.
SFA (3-7) is coming off two losses on Wednesday at McNeese State. The Ladyjacks did have success in their last tournament going 3-2 at the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic last weekend and defeating No. 8/9 Nebraska.
The Ladyjacks have already faced Sam Houston State once this season, opening the tournament in Houston with a loss before going on a streak of three straight wins over NCAA Regional teams Army and Nebraska then falling to Houston.
SFA is being led at the plate by first baseman Shalie Day. The sophomore is hitting .448 on the year and has driven in a team-leading 12 RBI thanks to three home runs. Freshman Brittany Lewis is hitting .344 this season and has six doubles.
On the rubber, senior Carlie Thomas has thrown three complete games, including a 1-0 shutout of Nebraska that earned her Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week.
