Amber Price leads SFA with her .350 batting average

The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will open play Friday in the Magic City Classic, hosted by UAB and Samford. The Ladyjacks will pay four games in three days, taking on Saint Louis, UAB, Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Illinois.
SFA will take on Saint Louis in the first game of the tournament on Friday. The contest is scheduled for a noon start at UAB Field. Saturday, the Ladyjacks will take on UAB at 12:30 p.m., then face Eastern Kentucky at 5:30. Both games will be at UAB. The action will wrap up Sunday with a 9 a.m. game against Eastern Illinois. That contest will be held at Samford's Bulldog Field.
SFA is 2-10 and coming off a 2-0 loss at Houston Baptist on Wednesday. Senior pitcher Monika Covington took the hard-luck loss after holding the Huskies to just three hits in six innings. The Ladyjacks put up more hits (four) than HBU but left nine runners stranded, including six in scoring position.
For the year, SFA has stranded 86 runners and has a .250 average with runners in scoring position. Junior Amber Price leads the team with a .350 batting average. Her five doubles are tied for third in the Southland Conference. SFA bats .212 as a team.
Freshman Carlie Thomas has the best record in the Ladyjack bullpen this season. She is 2-3 with a 5.64 ERA, having picked up two wins in last weekend's Ragin' Cajun Invitational.
Friday's opponent, Saint Louis, is 6-4 on the year and coming off strong weekend in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament. The Billikens went 3-2 with wins over Villanova, Florida Gulf Coast and Georgetown.
UAB is 5-6 on the year. The Blazers are coming off a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Alabama on Tuesday. The Tide needed three runs in the seventh inning to get the win. UAB went 3-2 at last weekend's South Florida Tournament.
Eastern Kentucky brings a 4-3 mark to the tournament. The Colonels are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Western Kentucky on Wednesday.
Eastern Illinois is 2-2 on the season with wins over Indiana State and ULM. The Panthers haven't played since Feb. 13.
