NACOGDOCHES, Texas -
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will continue Southland Conference play this weekend when SFA travels to San Marcos to take on Texas State in a three-game series. The set begins on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The series wraps up Sunday with a single game starting at noon.
This series matches up the two teams projected to win the 2011 Southland Conference title. SFA and Texas State tied atop preseason polling of league head coaches and sports information directors.
The Ladyjacks are coming off a 2-1 series loss to Sam Houston State to open Southland play. The Bearkats swept the first two games on Tuesday, but SFA rallied for a 3-1 win on Wednesday to salvage the series.
Senior Lauren Luetge drove in the winning runs with a three-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning. That hit saved a sterling pitching effort by classmate Monika Covington. She had held the Bearkats to a single unearned run on four hits and was in line to lose her fifth one-run decision of the year before Luetge delivered in the sixth.
SFA is batting .224 as a team, led by Elizabeth Arana's .328 average. Her nine RBI also lead the squad. The Ladyjack pitching staff carries a 5.34 ERA into this weekend's action.
Texas State is 7-12 on the year. The Bobcats opened league play this week by dropping three straight against UT Arlington. Texas State was shut out in the first two games of the series, then UTA took a 5-4 win in the finale.
The Bobcats hit .245 as a team behind Haley Lemons' .379 average. Lemons leads the squad with six doubles and 10 RBI. Texas State pitchers have combined for a 2.65 ERA. Ann Marie Taylor is 3-4 with a 1.76 ERA to lead the staff.
