UCA's Armstrong Helps Bears Sweep Ladyjacks
Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack Junior shortstop Elizabeth Arana hit her first home run of the season but it was not enough to prevent the Central Arkansas Bears from sweeping the first Southland Conference series of the season, defeating SFA 4-1 Sunday evening.
SFA (12-12, 3-0) was the only team to go undefeated last weekend to open Southland Conference play. The Ladyjacks swept Nicholls and are riding a four-game winning streak into this weekend’s series after a dominating 9-1 win over UTSA on Thursday in six innings.
The Ladyjacks opened conference play at UCA last year and dropped all three contests. SFA will have to make some adjustments this weekend as the Sugar Bears play on an artificial playing surface installed in 2011.
UCA (11-16, 2-1) was picked to finish fourth in the Southland this year by the league’s coaches after going 38-20 last year overall and 15-10 in league play. The Sugar Bears are a young team this year with just two seniors on the roster.
