NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Following two consecutive rainouts, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks softball team will finally hit the diamond again on Friday when they host Nicholls State at 4:30 p.m. in the first of a two-game series that wraps up on Saturday.
Prior to back-to-back rainouts against Baylor and Louisiana-Monroe, SFA (7-17, 0-2) had a tough opening weekend in Southland Conference play, getting no-hit twice in back-to-back losses at Texas State. Both Chandler Hall and Anne Marie Taylor held the Ladyjacks without a hit for 14 consecutive innings in 4-0 and 1-0 losses, respectively.
The Ladyjacks will be looking to ignite an offense that is hitting .200 as a team and have been outscored 144-72. Sophomore first baseman Elizabeth Arana has been a major bright spot offensively for SFA. Arana leads the team in batting average (.339), hits (21), doubles (7), homeruns (3), RBI (14) and slugging% (.597).
Nicholls State (4-18, 0-2) has had a rough go of it this season and have lost seven consecutive games coming into Friday, including two losses to Sam Houston State to start conference play. Senior third baseman Ashley Ray leads the Colonels with a .435 batting average, 11 runs, 27 hits, five homeruns and 19 RBI.
Nicholls has been outscored 134-74 and their pitching staff has a cumulative ERA of 5.24.
