    NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks softball team will be looking to bounce back from their series loss last weekend at Nicholls State when they host Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, March 29 at 1 p.m. 

    SFA (10-20, 3-6) sits just one game behind both the Colonels and SHSU for the seventh and eighth final playoffs spots in the Southland Conference standings. The Ladyjacks have won four of their last six contests and have raised their team batting average by almost 20 points during that time.

    Ladyjacks Swept In Doubleheader To Bearkats
    The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (8-20, 1-5) dropped a doubleheader Tuesday against Piney Woods rival Sam Houston by scores of 5-2 and 5-2, respectively. SFA committed a combined six errors in the two games and played a big part in Sam Houston's comeback in game two.

    Junior shortstop Elizabeth Arana leads SFA in batting average (.357), runs (13), hits (30), doubles (7), triples (2), RBI (14), total bases (44), slugging percentage (.524) and on-base percentage (.465). Sophomore transfer Shalie Day has also made her presence felt in her first season as a Ladyjack, batting .338 with two home runs and a .473 slugging percentage. 

    Junior hurler Carlie Thomas anchors the SFA pitching staff with a 7-9 record and a 2.83 ERA. The Huntington, Texas native has already thrown 13 complete games and struck out 89 batters while walking just 32.

    The Bearkats (18-17, 4-8) are 7-3 in their last 10 games but are coming off a series loss at Lamar, losing two out of three in Beaumont last weekend. Senior outfielder Tori Benavidez leads SHSU with a .420 batting average, 25 runs and 47 hits. The Midlothian, Texas native also has four home runs and 16 RBI and a team-best .441 on-base percentage. The Bearkats also have four other everyday players batting over .300, including sophomore infielder Hillary Adams (.308) and her team-best nine home runs and 32 RBI.

    In the circle the Bearkats have been led by Shelby Lancaster (8-6, 2.93 ERA) and Meme Quinn (5-4, 3.81 ERA).

    The two teams will close out the weekend series on Saturday at 1 p.m. SFA will next travel to Lake Charles, La. to face the McNeese State Cowgirls, April 6-7.
