SFA Blanks UIW 5-0 Behind Sikes’ Complete Game Shutout
Sophomore pitcher Makayla Sikes tossed her first complete game shutout of the year to lift the Stephen F. Austin softball team to a 5-0 blanking of Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon at Cardinals Field. With the result, the Ladyjacks head back to Nacogdoches with a 2-1 series victory.
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Softball team will be hosting Incarnate Word this weekend for their final home series of the 2017 season. UIW will be coming into town for a conference three-game series starting on Friday, April 21. The series starts with a doubleheader, which is set for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch with the second game to follow. The final game will have a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday.
The Ladyjacks will be honoring their graduating senior, Brittany Lewis, before the 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, so fans are encouraged to come out and support her recognition before the game.
The last time the UIW Cardinals and Ladyjacks faced each other was last year in a 2-1 series that SFA clenched with a 5-0 shutout against the Cardinals. The shutout was delivered by junior pitcher Makayla Sikes, who scattered just four hits, all singles, across 7.0 scoreless innings. She induced 15 groundouts and four flyouts while striking out a pair in the 5-0 verdict. Junior Taylor Fraccastoro, junior Autumn Holloway, and senior Brittany Lewis all contributed to the decision from a double and two scoring singles.
Last Time Out: SFA won its second conference series with a 2-1 decision over Houston Baptist. Lewis scored her sixth home run to tag the insurance run in the 2-0 win for SFA. Earlier Lewis swung the RBI sacrifice fly that scored freshman Madison Clements for the first mark. Junior Pitch Callee Guffey clenched the win, moving to 8-9 on the season. She scattered four hits from 28 batters and struck out four. In game two of the series, SFA jumped out to a 5-1 lead, the hottest at bat they have had in three innings all season, ending the game at 8-6. Contributing hits were from sophomore Emily Wolfe, sophomore Karli Herron, freshman Katie Clark, junior Amber Landry, and freshman Kiriany Hornberger.
Scouting UIW: Last week, Incarnate Word fell in a series sweep against Abilene Christian. The series finale ended in a 6-1 decision, putting UIW 3-15 in Southland play. Abilene Christian jumped to an early 6-0 lead in the first inning before Jessica Rodriguez was relieved in the circle. The Cardinals did get on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning after Alex Alonzo single up the middle scored Victoria Bratcher. Delany Guzman made two very good plays defensively that saved the one run for UIW.
Next Up: SFA will travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana for their next series game. The Ladyjacks will travel east on Friday, April 28 for a single game at 6:00 p.m., and then a doubleheader to follow on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
