HOUSTON, Texas -
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team came up on the short end of their 2013 season-opening match Tuesday afternoon at Houston, dropping a 5-1 decision. The match was moved to an indoor, off campus venue due to the rain. The two teams decided to play only the singles competition.
"I thought that our ladies came out and competed hard," said first year head coach Stephanie Wooten. "You have to give credit to Houston. The Cougars were prepared to play, and really came out and fought us. I think the most important thing for us is just getting some match experience."
The Cougars took the first five matches of the day before the Ladyjacks scratched the scoreboard. Freshman Kateryna Bugayenko defeated Houston's Charlotte Phillips for the Ladyjacks' lone point of the match. Prior to the conclusion of the match at No. 4 singles, classmate Valeria Terentyeva pushed her opponent to three sets before bowing out. Terentyeva won the first set 6-2, but was outscored 6-4 in the second. Terentyeva's opponent picked up a 10-5 victory in the tiebreaker for the win.
SFA returns to action Friday when they travel to Waco, Texas to compete in the HEB-Baylor Invite.
