Tennis Splits Pair On Opening Weekend
Jan. 25, 2010
DALLAS, Texas - The Ladyjack tennis team kicked off the 2010 season over the weekend, splitting a pair of matches against UTPA and No. 23 SMU at the Turpin Tennis Center.
It was a good start for SFA (1-1) on Friday as they pulled out a 4-0 win over UTPA (0-2) in the opener, getting a pair of points in doubles play with No. 1 doubles tandem Roxana Enica and Alina Shazkho picking up where they left off at the end of 2009 with an 8-4 win over Megan Bedeau and Luisa Cantu. SFA then picked up its second point with an 8-5 win by Paola Muntuenga and Alice Pacaut over Nina Ciric and Sarah Burton in No. 2 doubles.
From there it only took SFA picking up wins by Enica and Shazkho to clinch the match, while Tatiana Smolnikova also led her match when play was halted. Enica's win came in No. 1 singles over Bedeau (6-0, 6-2) and Shazkho's was in No. 2 play over Cantu (6-3, 6-4).
However, the Ladyjacks had trouble with the nation's No. 23 team on Saturday, with only Pacaut managing to tally a point in No. 5 singles play after taking a 6-3 win in the first set before Nicole Briceno retired for the match. The Mustangs managed to take the remainder of the matches in straight sets, including wins for regionally-ranked Marta Lesniak and Aleks Malyarchikova over Enica and Shazkho in No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
The Ladyjacks open up the home portion of their season on Friday when they host UTPA once again. Action is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. from the Schlief Tennis Complex.
