Ladyjacks Fall At No. 52 SMU
Jan. 26, 2014
DALLAS, Texas - Sophomore Valeria Terentyeva won her singles match 6-1, 6-0 over Macie Elliot, but the Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team fell 6-1 to SMU at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas. The match was the first match of the spring season for both SMU (1-0) and SFA (0-1).
"It was encouraging to see Lera win so convincingly," head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. "She has worked very hard and showed confidence and determination. It was also positive to see Malena Gordo and Denise Maxl being very close from taking both matches at the top of the line up to three sets.
"In terms of the doubles, I am very happy with Laura Servise's and Rachel Pierce's performance, but disappointed with the intensity we showed across the board. We are good enough to push SMU against the fence and we came in flat. We had our chances to scare them, but we lacked intensity and determination when we needed it the most.
"We have to learn from this loss and move forward, and understand that we can train the hardest, the longest, the smartest, but it is all for nothing if we don't truly believe in ourselves and each other. I look forward to a good week of practice in preparation for our first home match next Sunday against a very good Louisiana-Monroe."
The Ladyjacks dropped their first five matches in singles play, before Terentyeva gave SFA its only win on the day.
The Mustangs also swept the doubles point from SFA, with victories over the pairings of Gordo and Maxl (6-2) and Macarena Acosta and Andrea Ternera (6-1).
The Ladyjacks will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 2, when SFA host ULM at the Schlief Tennis Complex in Nacogdoches.
