SFA Downs Tyler Junior College, 6-1
Feb. 12, 2014
TYLER, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2014 season in a 6-1 victory over Tyler Junior College on Wednesday afternoon.
"Today we moved in the right direction," head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. "The girls did a great job taking this match very seriously. TJC is the winningest junior college program in the country for a reason. The intensity and consistency was much better across the board, and the team regained rhythm and confidence.
"I am especially happy to see Malena Gordo fight her way in to playing better and more confidently, and getting a win against one of the best junior college players in the country."
SFA (1-2) won two-of-three in doubles play to take an early 1-0 lead. The tandems of senior Rachel Pierce and Laura Servise, along with junior Julia Lorca and sophomore Kateryna Bugayenko handled the Apaches in 8-2 and 8-5 triumphs, respectively.
McMurry, who SFA was also scheduled to compete with, cancelled due to inclement weather the night before.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 14, when they take on Mississippi State in a neutral-site match at the Houston Country Club.
