NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjack tennis team opened up its Southland Conference season 2-0 after blowing past UTSA, 6-1, to close out a two-match weekend homestand.
SFA (6-1, 2-0 SLC) has now won five matches in a row and has started off conference play with consecutive wins for the first time since the 2000 season. Each of the last two wins has come against teams that pulled off victories over the Ladyjacks last season.
The Ladyjacks actually managed to take every match, doubles included, with the exception of No. 6 singles against the Roadrunners (2-6, 0-2 SLC). Even more impressive is that each of the SFA wins came in straight sets.
SFA opened up with a 1-0 lead after taking all three doubles matches, including Roxana Enica and Alina Shazkho running by Vivian Carrillo and Micaela Silva in No. 1 doubles by an 8-3 count. Paola Muntuenga and Alice Pacaut won their second consecutive league doubles match with an 8-7 win in No. 2 doubles over Sarah Adams and Caroline Dedering. Jamie Williams and Meaghan Ocanas made it a clean doubles sweep by getting by Kavya Menon and Katie Ottenbreit, 8-4, in No. 3 doubles.
Then SFA took over singles play as Enica and Shazkho each made up for their losses yesterday to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, starting with Enica getting a straight-set win (6-2, 6-2) over Silva. Shazkho easily got by Dedering (6-0, 7-5) in No. 2 singles. Muntuenga added a No. 3 singles win over Menon (6-2, 6-1).
Tatiana Smolnikova and Pacaut rounded out the SFA singles wins with Smolnikova getting her win over Carrillo (6-1, 6-1) in the No. 4 slot, and Pacaut doing her damage in the No. 5 spot over Adams (7-6, 6-0).
SFA will look to go to 3-0 in the league when it takes on Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
