Ladyjacks Knock Off Sam Houston State in League Opener

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks defeated Sam Houston State, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Schlief Tennis Complex in tennis' version of the Battle of the Piney Woods. The Ladyjacks improved to 4-7 on the season, and 1-0 in Southland Conference play, while the Bearkats fall to 4-5/0-1.
The Ladyjacks took a 1-0 lead after picking up wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles for the doubles point. Sophomore Malena Gordo kept the momentum on SFA's side when she defeated the Bearkats' Imke Jagau, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.
Sam Houston State cut into that lead when Tatyana Postnikova knocked off SFA's Margot de Haan, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Julia Lorca regained the advantage when she posted a straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles. The two teams split the decisions at Nos. 4 and 5 singles to give SFA the victory, but the most impressive win of the day came at the No. 6 spot.
Junior Laura Servise picked up a tough three-set victory over SHSU's Nadia Dubyanskaya for the team's fifth-point, including a tie break in the first and third set. After falling down 5-2 in the third, Servise rallied for a 7-6 win.
The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The match against the Islanders is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from the Schlief Tennis Complex.
