SFA records 10th consecutive win, beating Iowa State, 5-2
March 13, 2012
HOUSTON, Texas -
The No. 48 Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team posted a 5-2 victory over Iowa State Tuesday afternoon at the John E. Hoff Tennis Complex in Houston, Texas. It marked a program-best 10th-straight win for the youthful SFA squad that is now 12-2 on the season, and has not lost a match since its 5-1 setback at No. 5 Baylor back in January.
"We came in to the match with fresh legs, due to matches that were rained out this past week," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "In addition to that, we caught a bit of a break with ISU playing a tough 4-3 match in the heat against Houston yesterday. To their credit, the Cyclones fought hard and gave us a good match."
The 'Jacks carried a 1-0 lead into singles play after sweeping all three doubles matches. Sophomore Jithmie Jayawickrema tacked on the second point of the match with her 6-2, 6-1 win over the Cyclones' Meghan Cassens at No. 4 singles. Freshman Elena Kordolaimi pulled SFA within one point of the overall victory when she scored a straight-set win over ISU's Maria Macedo (6-3, 6-0) at No. 1 singles. Kordolaimi's shutout in the second set was the team's lone shutout of the day.
Classmates Malena Gordo and Julia Lorca ended any chance of an Iowa State rally when they posted victories at Nos. 5 and 6 singles respectively. The Cyclones jumped on the scoreboard with singles wins at No. 2 and 3 singles, but the outcome of the match had already been decided.
"Elena played well at No. 1 singles, and the bottom our lineup really took care of business," said Sullivan. "We get a little time off now and then we will get ready for our home opener against Lamar, who beat us 7-0 last season. So we are looking forward to that match."
SFA returns to action Wednesday, Mar. 21, when they return to Southland Conference play against Lamar. The match against the Lady Cardinals is slated for a 1:30 p.m. start from the Schlief Tennis Complex, and will serve as the team's 2012 home opener.
