THIBODAUX, La. - The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team dropped a pair of conference matches over the weekend, including a 5-2 decision at Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday and a 4-3 decision at Nicholls on Sunday.
The Ladyjacks (8-6, 3-3 Southland) have now dropped four matches in a row, three of which have been away from Nacogdoches.
Things looked promising for SFA on Saturday after stealing the doubles point from Southeastern Louisiana (7-8, 3-3 Southland) to jump out to an early lead. Roxana Enica and Alina Shazkho did their part with an 8-4 win over Audrey Chelini and Camille Pilon in No. 1 doubles, as did Paola Montuenga and Alice Pacaut with their 8-6 win over Morgane Dadot and Nina Schmied in No. 2 doubles that secured the point.
But the Lady Lions responded to take the top five singles matches with only Enica managing to not go down in straight sets. Pacaut managed to take a straight-set win (6-2, 6-3) over Annika Hanke in No. 6 singles for the only other Ladyjack point.
The Ladyjacks actually split singles play with the Colonels on Sunday, but Nicholls managed to take the doubles point early on and that proved to be the difference in the Colonels taking the one-point victory - their fifth win in their last six matches.
Nicholls took all three matches in doubles play for a 1-0 lead, but SFA picked up its points in singles play, starting with Montuenga's 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles. Tatiana Smolnikova dug deep to pick up a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 comeback win over Tatiana Denezhkina. Pacaut earned the other SFA point in No. 6 singles, knocking off Melissa Harrison in a 7-5, 6-4.
SFA continues league play on Friday at Texas State, followed by a match on Saturday at UT-Arlington.
