ARLINGTON, Texas - The Ladyjack tennis team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend, falling to both Texas State and UT-Arlington by 5-2 scores on Friday and Saturday.
SFA (8-8, 3-5 Southland) has now dropped six matches in a row after an 8-2 start to the season.
Alina Shazkho and Paola Montuenga were the only Ladyjacks able to score points in either match as both won their singles matches each day. Shazkho also managed to turn in a standout weekend in doubles play winning each of her matches No. 1 doubles with Roxana Enica.
She and Enica picked up an 8-7 (7-4) win over the Texas State tandem of Giraldo/Hadad on Friday, but the Bobcats rallied to take both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Shazkho and Montuenga picked up the only two singles points of the match for the Ladyjacks with Shazkho getting the best of Hadad (6-2, 6-1) for the second time in the day and Montuenga knocking off Gabriela Rojas (6-2, 6-3) at No. 3 singles.
The following day followed suit as the duo of Enica and Shazkho earned an 8-5 win over Negreanu and Jagosova, but it was the Lady Mavs taking both other matches to take the doubles point.
Again it was Shazkho and Montuenga that were the only ones able to score for SFA, with Shazkho defeating Jagosova (5-7, 7-5, 10-4) in the No. 2 slot. Montuenga defeated Katarina Mlcochova (6-4, 6-1) of UTA for the last SFA point, marking her fifth singles win in her last six tries and nine of her last 11 overall.
The Ladyjacks now get each of their final three matches at their home complex, beginning this weekend when they host McNeese State on Saturday and Lamar on Sunday. SFA will then wrap up the regular season when it hosts Sam Houston on April 14.
