SFA Routs The Lady Lions, 6-1
April 5, 2014
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team continued their winnings way, routing Southeastern Louisiana 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
“I am very proud of the girls for taking care of business,” head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. “They are all doing a very good job at enjoying the process, but also playing with urgency and a lot of heart.
“Southeastern Louisiana is a very good team even with the injuries it has had this year. It always feels good to beat last year’s regular season champion in such convincing way.”
The Ladyjacks (10-7, 6-2 SLC) swept the doubles point from SELU (11-5, 5-4 SLC), and dropped just one match in singles to pick up their second win in as many days.
Servise again won by default in singles play to give the Ladyjacks a 2-0 lead, before SFA ran off four more wins to take the match. Freshman Andrea Ternera and sophomore Valeria Terentyeva picked up convincing victories in No. 4 and No. 5 singles, winning 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively. Maxl and Lorca also closed out their day with wins.
“We are still having a few lapses where we are losing concentration and where our decision making goes off route,” Aspillaga said. “This aspect is what makes the difference between losing 4-3 or winning 4-3 against teams like Northwestern State or Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. We look forward to working on this in preparation to a pair of very tough matches next weekend.”
The Ladyjacks will now retake the road for two matches at McNeese State and Nicholls State on consecutive days. SFA will play at McN on April 12, before playing at NICH on April 13.
