SFA Downs SHSU 5-2 On Good Friday

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team picked up their fourth consecutive win at home with a 5-2 win over Sam Houston State on Friday at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
"Happy with the way we competed in singles," head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. "Our rivalry with Sam Houston is very special, and they were very competitive today."
The Ladyjacks (11-9, 7-4 SLC), after dropping a contested doubles point, responded with five victories in singles against SHSU (4-12, 2-9 SLC) to pick up their first match win since April 5.
The tandem of junior Julia Lorca and Malena Gordo downed Imke Jagau and Kayla Stevenson (SHSU) of the Bearkats 8-3 in No. 1 doubles, before both picked up wins in singles play. Gordo picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Olivia Battye in No. 1 singles, as Lorca beat Stevenson 6-1, 6-1 in No. 4 singles.
Freshman Denise Maxl held on for a 6-2, 7-5 win over Jagau in No. 2 singles.
Sophomores Valeria Terentyeva and Kateryna Bugayenko picked up wins in No. 3 and No. 6 singles to secure the victory. Terentyeva beat Natalie Petaia 6-3, 6-4 and Bugayenko defeated Isabella Costa 6-3, 6-0.
SFA will close out the regular season on Saturday against Lamar. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. and will mark the final home match for seniors Laura Servise and Rachel Pierce in Nacogdoches.
