NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks tennis team hosted four schools on day one of the Schleif Tennis Invite Saturday, which was highlighted by Malena Gordo advancing to play Sam Houston State’s Karen Martinez in the Draw A final on Sunday.
Gordo won both rounds of singles play, defeating Sam Houston’s Kayla Stevenson 7-5, 6-4, before defeating UT-Arlington’s Elizabeth Toms (6-3, 5-7, (11-9)) in the semi-finals.
Valeria Terentyeva will be playing in the consolation semi-final on Sunday against Bella Costa (SHSU) after falling to SHSU’s Karen Martinez (7-6, (7-4), 6-0).
The doubles pair of Gordo and Terentyeva are leading Natalie Petaia and Madeleine Mortimore (SHSU) and have been delayed for rain until tomorrow. The SFA tandem currently leads the Bearkat pair 1-0, after taking the opening match 6-1.
Rachel Pierce and Macarena Sedano Acosta advanced to semi-final of doubles and will wait to see who they will play on Sunday since UT-Arlington withdrew their doubles team.
