    Tennis Strong on Day One at the ITA Regionals

    Four members of the Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team competed in the ITA/USTA Regional Champions this afternoon. Out of 128 singles matches played Friday, SFA advanced three of its four players into the main draw of singles play.

    Elena Kordolaimi defeated Mirna Cicak, from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a tough three-setter 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. Kordolaimi fell short in her second match of the day, dropping a 6-1, 6-2, decision to Texas Tech's CAROLINA STARCK NOW.

    Malena Gordo won her first singles match at the regional champions against Jo Garvey from University of Houston 6-2, 6-2. Gordo went on to play North Texas's Kseniya Bardabush, but unfortunately lost 6-2, 6-3.

    The 'Jacks lone returning letterwinner, Alina Shazhko, squared off against Texas' Annat Rabinovich and won a two-set match 6-4, 6-2. She followed that up with a three-set victory over Houston's Liselot Koenen, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

    Tereza Bekerova, ranked number 15 at the tournament, had an opening-round bye her and faced a tough battle from UTEP's Marie LeBlond but prevailed, 7-6, 6-1.

    The four women also participated in doubles play. Shazhko and Kordolaimi won their first match against conference rivals, Sam Houston's Sheridan Currie and Imke Jagau, 11-8. The doubles duo lost their second match 8-2. Bekerova and Gordo were ranked number seven in doubles action and had a bye their first round before falling to TCU in a close match, 8-6. Bekerova and Gordo went on to win in the consolation draw against RU 8-5. They play again Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m.

    The women look to continue play tomorrow morning from the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus in Fort Worth.
