HOUSTON, Texas – The SFA women’s tennis team played the final matches of University of Houston’s Cougar Classic on Sunday.
The field featured 11 schools including nationally ranked No. 18 Texas Tech, No. 22 Rice, and No. 52 Arkansas. Also competing were Houston, Maryland, Texas State, Kansas, Lamar, Prairie View A&M, Iowa State and Northwestern State.
Close matches were the theme of the day with four Ladyjacks seeing three set singles matches and featuring a tight doubles bout.
Kate Bugayenko led the day for SFA with a tough match against Katy Collins of Texas State. The two played to a tiebreaker in the first set with Bugayenko coming out on top 7-6 (4). The Ladyjack would go on to drop set No. 2 6-4, but bounce back in the third set tiebreaker to close the match with a winning score of 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-8.
Playing to a similar score outcome was Lera Terentyeva netting two tiebreakers, but fell in three to Ana Gasparovic (ISU) 6-3, 6-7 (0), 10-6. Also dropping tight matches in three sets were Malena Gordo (3-6, 6-2, 10-4) to Maryland’s Alexandra Stanova and Julia Lorca with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 score to Lamar’s Dariya Dashutina.
Lorca and doubles partner Macarena Sedano Acosta met Natalya Krutova and Aliona Ladutsha (Northwestern State) playing in yet another tight match, but falling with a 9-7 tally.
The Ladyjacks will appear next at Texas’ Longhorn Invitational in Austin from Nov. 8-10.
