NACOGDOCHES, Texas -
Two Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis players have received preseason recognition as first-year head coach Patrick Sullivan prepares his team for the upcoming 2011 spring schedule. Senior Andreea Enica is currently ranked #106 nationally according to the ITA women's tennis singles rankings, while junior Alina Shazhko is ranked 12th in the Texas region.
"To have two girls in the rankings for the first time in program history is a good sign that things are headed in the right direction," said Sullivan. "Being recognized in this way is a nice reward for our solid play this fall. I'm very proud of both Andy and Alina and hope that this gives our entire team a little extra motivation heading into our season.
"I also want to recognize Andy's older sister Roxana, who served as our student assistant coach this past semester and graduated in December. Her great work on court this fall was a big part of our fall results and these individual rankings and she will be missed," added Sullivan.
Enica's #106 ranking is one of the highest individual rankings for a Ladyjack tennis player. She is coming off a junior campaign that saw her record 10 wins. She spent the season as the squad's No. 1 singles player, and split her time between Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.
Shazhko's regional ranking is the highest ever achieved by a Ladyjack player. The former Southland Conference Freshman of the Year teamed up with Roxana Enica to post 10-5 record at No. 1 doubles in 2010. The team's No. 2 singles' player, Shazhko finished the year with 18 total wins.
The Ladyjacks will open the spring season Saturday, Jan. 29, when they travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on Trinity and St. Mary's (TX). The first match will begin at 10 a.m.
