Jithmie Jayawickrema has signed a National Letter of Intent to play tennis, and further her education at Stephen F. Austin head coach Patrick Sullivan announced Monday afternoon. Ranked as the top player in Sri Lanka, Jayawickrema becomes the second player signed by Sullivan during his first season at SFA.
"I am very excited to add Jithmie to our program," said Sullivan. "She is a great competitor and will make an immediate impact on our program. It's exciting that a top recruit like Jithmie recognized what we have to offer here at SFA and wants to be part of building something special."
One of the top junior players in the world, Jaywickrema sports an impressive tennis résumé, with 73 victories at the international level. A native of Colombo, Sri Lanka, Jayawickrema comes to SFA as not only the top junior player, but the top women's player in Sri Lanka, and represented her country in Federation Cup play, notching a 6-0, 6-2, victory over Turkmenistan's Umma Alisultanova, at age 17.
Sullivan's troops kick off the spring schedule Saturday, Jan. 29 when they travel to San Antonio, Texas to face Trinity and St. Mary's (TX). The first match of the doubleheader is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
