The defending Southland Conference tournament champion Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team heads to Beaumont, Texas Friday to open the 2013 conference championship tournament. The Ladyjacks enter the conference playoffs as the No. 5 seed after posting a 10-12 (.455) overall and 5-4 (.556) conference record. All matches will be played at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
The Ladyjacks open the tournament Friday against fourth-seeded Northwestern State (11-7/6-3 SLC) at 2 p.m. The only meeting between the two schools was a heartbreaker in favor of the Lady Demons, 4-3. SFA took the doubles point against Northwestern State but dropped four singles matches which decided the outcome.
The Ladyjacks enter the tournament trying to right the ship having lost three of four and two consecutive. Northwestern State has won six of its last eight matches entering the tournament, but has split its last four decisions.
If the Ladyjacks get past Northwestern State, they will face the winner of top-seeded Southeastern Louisiana, and No. 8-seed Central Arkansas. SFA is a combined 0-2 this season versus the two schools on the other side of the pod.
The Ladyjacks will be led by two All-SLC selections in sophomores Malena Gordo and Julia Lorca. Both second-team honorees, Gordo received the honor as a singles and doubles player, while Lorca received all-conference honors in doubles only.
The championship match will take place Sunday at 2 p.m.
