NACOGDOCHES, Texas -
The 64-team bracket for the 2012 NCAA Championships was released late Tuesday afternoon, and the 46th-ranked Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team will face Tulsa in the opening round. The nation's 25th-ranked team, the Golden Hurricane enter the NCAA Championships as the second-seeded team in the pod. Champions of Conference USA, Tulsa brings a 22-3 record into the postseason.
The match will be played on the Baylor campus in Waco, Texas on Friday, May 11th. The Lady Bears, a team SFA faced earlier in the season, are the No. 12 overall seed.
SFA is the No. 3 seed in the four-team pod, which marks the highest seed for a Southland team in the NCAA Championships in league history. The other school in the four-team pod is Oral Roberts.
"It is a tremendous honor to be among the top 64 teams advancing to the NCAA Championships," said SLC Coach of the Year Patrick Sullivan. "I'm really happy for the girls to know that all of their hard work and dedication has been rewarded. It is even more special knowing that our team garnered as much respect as they did from the selection committee. Tulsa is a very talented and well-coached team, and we are looking forward to the challenge."
The 'Jacks set a school and conference record for wins this past season with 23, which breaks the old league mark of 22 in the modern era of 25 competition dates. SFA was honored following the season with six all-conference selections, including four first-team selections.
SFA's 23 wins rank among the nation's best. SFA is currently tied for fourth nationally with their 23 wins (No. 17 Nebraska). The other teams are No. 3 Duke (25 wins), No. 60 College of Charleston (25 wins) and Akron (24 wins).
